Title: Project Imperial Star Destroyer (Aggressor) by Raskolnikov
Post by: hre1d on July 19, 2018, 02:59 pm
So where do I begin…  I suppose a quick overview and credit to the designer, Raskolnikov. Thank-you for designing some an awesome MOC.

- Hangar carries two folding TIE Fighters.
- Press a button to launch probe droids.
- Turbolasers rotate in unison by turning one of the main engines.
- Model features an original structure and design
- Easy to remove top panels for (relatively) quick access to the interior
- Weight: ~27 lbs (12.25 kgs)
- Length: ~37 inches (94 cm) (i.e., approximately the same length as set 10030)

I first glimpsed my eyes on this beast late last year, and have always been drawn back to it over on Eurobricks.

Having talked myself in and out of the project so many times, mainly due to the financial and time commitments required for sourcing 15,000+ parts, and also, whether or not I had the skills to follow it through.

So with that being said, I was browsing eBay (SW LEGO of course), and came across a listing for all parts required for the first section (Book 1) of the ISD.  I struck an excellent deal with the seller, and secured the first 3132 parts (all new LEGO) for the build.

Upon receiving the parts, most of which where connected together (pain in the butt), I sorted through and counted each part with reference to my custom Rebrickable list.  To give credit where it’s due, the seller sent EVERY SINGLE part, with no shortages at all.

All Book 1 parts sorted.

Finally, instructions purchased and ready to build.  Having had a quick peek through, it's definitely going to be a challenge.

Wish me luck!

I was trying to imagine that weight ..    Woosh ability 0 build\display 1000000, that's an awesome project unequally impressive results

Wow that is impressive Houston and your sorting even more so. Looks like some busy days ahead, time to stock up on building food and drink supplies. Hope you have somewhere in mind to display this when its done. 15,000 parts is monstrous. Can you share what were the most common parts?

First update… I’m about 20% into Book 1, and it’s been fantastic so far.  The amount of hours spent in designing this must have been colossal, I have been so impressed.  It’s been really enjoyable, and sorting the parts before building is a must (highly recommended if anyone ventures the build).

Thanks John! Yep, zero woosh ability, but should be very easy on the eye once finished.

Good luck!  Thats some build your embarking on.

Thanks Patrick.  I’ve only rekindled my love for LEGO in the past number of years, and always wanted to build something huge, so I think this ticked the box.

Thanks Eamonn.  I do like to footer and sort out parts.  As above, the build has been so much more enjoyable with all the parts sorted.

Thanks David, I do have a special place for it, although I’ll have to rejig my display room slightly, and I still have to build 75192, as I haven’t broke the seal on the box yet.

Sure! Of the entire parts list, the most common part is the LBG 2 x 4 tile, I think it’s in the region of 430 or so.

Oh my god. I think I may need to give my bank card to herself to stop me following in your footsteps.

Will.need to see in the "brick" when ur done.

My wife has been great in terms of LEGO, very lucky man! Absolutely Aidan, if I get to the finish line ;-)

Quick update... 70% into Book 1.  My aim at the weekend was to complete both side structures and join these together.  The join itself was straightforward, and with some wiggling, the studs came together nicely.

I've started to gather the parts for Book 2, but I'm in no rush, and have enjoyed taking my time.

Are all the parts at the start for book 1?  Build looks great.  I'd love some space in the house for building but kids and a dog ruined that :)  At the end of the day, the theme tune for Bosco comes on ... tidy up, goodbye, goodbye, thats all we have time for today...

Yes Patrick, all parts in the images in the opening post are for Book 1 only, just over 3100 parts.

Book 2 has approx. 3000 parts also, along a number of stickers, including the main sticker from 10188 (First Death Star), which I've recently found out is quite expensive (and the instructions state that I will need 16 of these).  The cost of all 16 is eye-watering, and I'll probably end up going with a couple, to add those interior details.

Also had to mock up a quick stand in the images above, as the structure wasn't supporting itself, and putting pressure of the hinged section, and inevitably breaking off.

Quick look at brick link and I see what you mean! €80 for the 16 is saucy.  Anyone know how to print your own stickers?

€80 is the cheapest I've found too, and then basically the price doubles. I will most likely buy a couple of sheets, and use them on the prominent interior rooms for detail.

There is a new YouTube video from Beyond the Brick, which displays the designers fleet of Star Destroyers.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKGaeZY8oeg

Gives a good overview of the completed build.

David, the Technic aspect is fantastic.  Haven't had much time this week to work on it, about 15 minutes yesterday evening, which involved further structure support at the front join, so yes, it's very study.  Once the other joins are added, along with the engine section, I think it will be pretty robust.

Book 1 Complete.

I've started gathering the parts for Book 2, and yes, that is a sticker sheet from 10188, expensive to buy in UK, I sourced this one affordable sheet from Czech Republic. The instructions require 16 of these sheets in total (very expensive) so I'll make do with one for some detail.

Another couple of Bricklink order should see Book 2 ready for building.

It is indeed Aidan! It's quite a weight already, and to think what it will weigh when it's finish will definitely test the stands.

I have been taking my time with it, and gathering the parts gradually.  Another couple of BL orders placed this morning ;-)

Quick update... all 3069 parts sourced and purchased for Book 2.

Been so busy in the past month with work and family weddings, so hoping to find free time this weekend to beginning sorting (I love sorting) in preparation for building.

So do I... These final packages arrived with me at the start of the week, and can't wait to get them opened up.  I love the process of checking off BL orders, and then sorting by part/type/colour.

This second book focuses mostly on the interior and bridge, but also the side greebling on the ISD, so lots of 1x1s and 1x2s :-)

Having everything laid out is majorly convenient, but the time taken to sort them all takes from the search and find build or do you just want it made already

Some more progress shots, I've been really busy with work lately, and having had much time to spend on the ISD (also preoccupied in building Slave 1).  I've started Bricklinking parts for Book 3 with Book 2 building almost complete.

It is a vast project no doubt, one which I'm enjoying and taking my time over (not to mention to cost in the parts alone).  Sometimes I do question myself on whether or not to continue with it, mainly due to the cost, but hey, I'm in no panic, and to be honest, it keeps me focused as I've had no real desire to purchase any of the Star Wars sets from TLG in the past year.

This sure is turning out great. Impressed with the interior. The tables and bunk beds in particular.

Those bunk beds are fantastic alright.  Looks like such a fun build.  How many books in total?

The bunk beds and the canteen were really fun to build, my wife was impressed with the interior, which led me onto showing her some of the city/town MOCs from forum members.

There are 8 books in total Patrick.  Books 1 and 2 required approximately 6200 parts, so that's over a third the way there ;-)  The quality of the intructions are fantastic too, a real credit to the guy who designed the PDFs.

Edited to restore original post.

Remember, as long as the parts are mainly LBG in colour and reasonably priced vs the market value its money well spent. If you ever tire of this you can of course re-use the parts so it's never a one-off expense with LEGO. And think of all that entertainment time spent clicking which otherwise could be spent elsewhere and maybe with associated costs like going to the cinema to watch TLM 2! Well that's how I internally process it.

Dear god I love this. Will have to find out the end cost when your done to see if I could apply for planning permission from herself. Space will be hardest to find as have so much LEGO displayed in house as it is. But I’m sure cost is massive

Details is fantastic really excited to see the hangar detail given the detail already shown on inside.

Don’t see it being a very mobile display piece either. Will need to get you one of this glass coffee tables I have seen displaying the big falcon set.

I assume it scores low on "swoosh-ability" but if the interior is accessible it could have high play-ability ratings. So hre1d, do the roofs come off?

I suspect however that playing around with it may not be hre1d's plan. That said I could be wrong.

Exactly David, that's the way I view it, LBG can always be re-used, someday when I decide to pack in SW and rekindle my first love of City/Town sets.

Absolutely Aidan, I have all my BL invoices, and to be honest, I have been lucky with the cost so far, as I've spent quite a bit of time on BL and buying smart.  As mentioned in my OP, I picked up the entirety of Book 1 parts on eBay for an excellent deal, I think the guy just felt that he wasn't going to see the project through.

Space wise, it's about the same length as 10221, albeit much wider, and slightly higher, but I do have a special place for it (it's replaced my dedicated 75192 space - which I purchased this time last year which still has the seal on the box).

Glass coffee table in my living room, hmmm, I think Mrs hre1d would have something to say about that!

Aidan, when I first set my eyes on this a few years back, I had the same feeling, I would love to build that.  Keep an eye on the other forums and eBay, I've seen a few examples of builds where they had decided not to continue with it, you could pick up a good deal!

I assume it scores low on "swoosh-ability" but if the interior is accessible it could have high play-ability ratings. So hre1d, do the roofs come off?

I suspect however that playing around with it may not be hre1d's plan. That said I could be wrong.

In it's current state, it's very 'swooshable', very study if you hold onto the black stands, but once finished, I would imagine it'll be much more difficult.

Yes, the bridge and the roofs lift off to access the interior, the video below displays the play-ability, although the original designer had made a few mods to his original design.

https://youtu.be/aKGaeZY8oeg?t=464

Yes David, it will mostly be for display, although I have found myself messing about with my mini Imperial Army in the canteen area.

At the end of Book 2, the modular bridge was built, which can easily be removed to access the engine room.

Book 3 is entirely focused on the underside of the ISD, so plenty of plates, tiles etc.  Few more BL orders to do and then can get started.

Is this the ISD that's for sale on brickset, a project this size needs sponsorship from Disney and a team to assemble it. Although if I had the time and finances this would be an Ultimate Ultimate build
