Title: Classics anyone?
Post by: David on May 30, 2018, 11:13 am
Here's my small collection of old sealed sets (apologies for the light bulb effect).

I'm not a collector of new box sets but like to add an odd old set now and then as I find them a real throwback to my younger years and great memories.

And I do love the LEGO System and LEGOLAND logos.

Very nice.  All mine are unboxed and well played with! Here are 2 from the late seventies that my brother grew out of and I commendeered ;-)

I have nothing old in or out of a box , I do have 10 unopened small sets and have been asked "what's wrong with you?" ,so David WHATS WRONG WITH YOU? ¿? I did get to see those sets and had my throwback moment too

Where to start John, where to start...

@Patrick, nice sets, little dusty but don't look in bad nick all things considered.

Flicking through my phone images, I forgot that I had re-bulit this last year.  This was my favourite set as a kid, think I got it for Christmas in 1994 (or 1993 - not sure).

#6398 - Central Precinct HQ

Many hours were spent playing with this set, and really developed my love for LEGO.

P.S - just noticed I haven't placed the helicopter in the image

It hasn't dated too badly ,could pass as a outer city precinct cop shop

Another classic from yesteryear... I think this may have been my second LEGO set as a kid, set 6666, originally released in 1994. The eagle-eyed members will notice it's not 100% correct, the windows are supposed to have stickers applied (horizontal blind style), but can't seem to find them anywhere.

Also have box and instruction manual

I do love these older sets, and currently sorting through my bricks to rebuild my first ever LEGO set.  Will post up once built.

An attempt to bring the anti4-wides into saying nice things ,I found a front chassis 4wide where driver sits and brought back the horrors ,also found a few openable  roof parts too ,only thing is those old sets with box+instructions are valuable

So over the weekend, and after building 6666 last week, I spent most of Saturday building a lot of my old Town sets.  Most of the sets are complete, bar a few, but the eagle-eyed members will spot the missing/replaced pieces.  I've my BL list created to restore them to 100%.  Anyway, here they are:

6509

6649

6352 - I actually don't remember having this set when I was a kid. Personal favourite of sets posted (obviously for playability factor).

I've a few more classic town sets which I hope to put together shortly, so no doubt I'll be back in here soon again.

How did I miss this thread!
Will be back to flood with pics of my old sets!!!!

Can't wait to see these Lisa!

Love all of these and have all of them in my possession. The first three were mine, the final three my brothers so I guess these are arranged in approximate year of release perhaps?

The condition of yours looks much better than mine however.

(Pretty sure that rear spoiler on the red racer is for one of those missing pieces)

Correct David, the rear spoiler on the Red Racer isn't 100% accurate, I've searched everywhere for the correct red hinge piece and cannot find it anywhere!

Another set re-built this weekend, 100% complete (exception of one tiny sticker).

6442 - Sting Ray Explorer - released 1997.

I've a few more classic sets in the pipeline, will post them soon.

It has stood the test of time really well, and yes, the arms still have got the clutchability, actually surprised how well they move.

Found the box for this set today too, sadly no instructions have turned up yet!

Another build from my collection, had to replace four 1x1s with colour alternatives (I have the originals somewhere in the bottom of a box, I gave up looking at 11:30pm last night), but other than that, 100% original.

6342 - Beach Rescue Chopper - released in 1993.

The difference in builds of today versus 90's makes the old stuff seem
overly blocky although the sail board has a simplistic reality that can't be improved on

One of favourite sets ever - Vacation Hideaway.
Missing from the picture are male & female minifigures, a bbq and a red bicycle.  I do still have them, they're just mixed in with other things!

Another vehicle from my younger days collection: 6430 - Night Patroller.

Loved this set when I was a kid, I guess it was the 9V pack which operated the sirens/lights, and set it off from most other City/Town vehicles at that time.

I loved putting together the lights on the old sets,  the newer vehicles look more realistic  as a whole but no more room than the old ones for drivers

Yearly bump (strangely to the date)... my folks were clearing out their attic at the weekend and came across this little gem, hidden away inside an old sweetie box.

Even has the original bags and spares inside.  So of course I was straight out today on the hunt for more, but sadly no luck.

Nice box art showing alt builds,  hate to admit the 4wide is more to minifig scale for this type of vehicle ,I'm a 6wide fan but 8 is sticking it's studs in so I'll be the reminisser soon. Love the sunlight /opening roof too

8159 half complete ie.redcar missing heaps of parts ,well played with and hands removed, replaced by yellow. Didn't seem sturdy but it is ,SPOILER it's an 8wide ,which would fit with recent speed champions
Title: Re: Classics anyone?

8141 pullback and crash to pop off the engine missing a few bits ,had to use 3pins in blue as I had no black and a few other swapsies of colour or brick style! Only one part missing the engine cowl, as this was a rescue from the depths of the dump I'm super happy and I might even rescue a cowl part another day. Warning to parents "DON'T LET YOUR CHILDREN PLAY WITH  LEGO" this is what happens and as much as I enjoy building I hate having to scrape about to make incomplete sets

What a coincidence haha, every bricklink order I've placed in the last couple of years I've been checking to see if stores have these 3 on my "Posters" wanted list!

The middle is my favourite too John! I simply love the design of these posters, the colours used and presentation of the sets is sublime.

I do somewhat wonder what they used for graphic design back then, believe Photoshop was released in the early 90s, so wasn't that old and established on the market.

Tom, I had a LEGO System poster from years ago, circa 1995 maybe, not sure, but can't find it anywhere.

I purchased these on eBay for very little money, think it was £6 for all 3 posters.

Also have a 1992 Paradisa poster too. Once I get another frame for it, and it'll be going on the wall too.

Yes, very pleased how these turned out David.

There are all suppose to be A2 (42.0 x 59.4 cm) sized posters.  One was a couple of mm longer, which required a slight fold to fit into the frames.

Ordered the frames from ASDA, they are out of stock now, cheap and cheerful and do the job.

They look fantastic Tom, liking the mount too.  I've been watching a number of System posters on eBay for the past while, Pirates, Castle & Spyrius, but they are steep at £30 each, not sure if I can justify that price tag, they look to be in great order though.

Recently purchased this one at decent money.  I've been slowly building up the Town sets from 1993/1994, trying to get well looked after examples with boxes is challenging, but I'm loving the chase.  I've a few others bought, not yet built, but will post in here soon.

It was packed away in the chap's attic, he had a few other sets but some of the boxes were a tad too far gone in terms on condition.

Post man brought me this little box this morning.

Finally got around to building 6350 Pizza to Go, lovely little set, although the main sticker does let it down a little, will try and source a new one. The eagle eyes will spot the parasol pole isn't quite accurate, unfortunately I don't have the old grey version at hand.  I loved this set when I was a kid, and plan to clean it up with fresh new white pieces.

And another... 6594 Gas Transit... I finally got one.  Had been looking for quite some time to find one in excellent used condition, along with a decent box.  Picked this one up on eBay a few weeks back, maybe a little more than I wanted to pay for it, but not as extortionate as buying a sealed one.

Probably one of the best examples I've seen, really well kept, original plastic bags and spares, along with instructions and leaflets in fantastic condition.  But wait... where are the tanker Octan stickers? They weren't applied, and still on the original sheet.

I might purchase some aftermarket stickers as can't bring myself to apply the originals.

More to come :-)

A pizzeria brick built sign might be nicer than a sticker sheet. The batman movie scarecrow delivery bike dwarfs the van. Love the octan truck , very 80's and could be replicated easy enough (i think).who knew the heights they'd scale to in the lego world.

It could well be 10 wide in a decade, can only imagine city layouts will become huge to accomodate the size.  That would be a epic find, the nostalgia would be off the chart!

It really is a pity about the multi-brick stickers, so many of those yesteryear sets suffer from them.

I'm currently working my way through 6397 Gas N' Wash Express... really good condition although I'm missing a couple of Octan stickers for the other signpost :-( The tow vehicle needs a little attention too.

Strangely, I was into tractors when I was younger too, Britains too, I lived in the country but not on a farm, relatives had farms, maybe where that's where it came from, who knows.  4wide intolerant - that give me a chuckle. Another cracker I picked up a few weeks back.

6562 - Gas Stop Shop - I haven't built it yet, it all looks to be in decent condition, I think one sticker might be a tad discoloured, but will see. You may notice a pattern forming, I've a thing about Octan sets of lately.

Still haven't got round to building 6346 and 6552, but did pick up another couple of sets.

4537 - Twin Tank Transport

6561 - Hot Rod Club

This set was like new, included the instructions and catalogue, and also, the poster! I always weary of the sticker condition with these sets, but again, luckily, they were in really good condition.  Think this will be the next one on the list to build, will introduce my 6538 into the Club too :-)

Love the hot rod set , I'm seeing a Fonz with a hammer. Poor 4wides look so small near the 6s and more like kid ride-on toys near the 8s! Love the yellow off-road too! I got about half a litre of really old stuff-not worn but serious fading, a few bits of the "round head -flexible arms" figs .Also some metal axle -one piece wheels

Finally built 6561, nice set, will post pics up soon, and yes, Fonz with the tools lol

Haven't got near any of the others yet :-(

Indeed, the 4 wides are so small against 6 wides, but I love them.  I was in the Smyths at the weekend past, and noticed the detail in latest vehicles, the small vintage tractor in one of the new Friends set (42617) caught my eye, as well as the pickup in Jurassic Park (76946) set.

Back to the classics, another set picked up.

4556 - Metroliner

And yep, that is the original price sticker of the set on the top right corner of the box, a cool £99.95... which was a lot back in 1991/1992.  Tested the 9V system this evening, all working nicely. Excited to build this one. Pics to come soon.
